My furbae, Mojo

My furbae, Mojo

So it’s pronounced “you-ay”

Hey I’m Yue. And yes Yosemite is my real middle name.

I’m an LA-based on-air host and a content producer with a focus on three main areas:

1) Dating

2) Tech

3) Fitness

My entertainment career has seen many iterations including appearances on networks such as MTV, AMC, Discovery and NBC, dozens of commercials, and TV shows in China and the UK. Through it all, I’ve learned that I truly enjoy creating content and telling a compelling story. That is why in addition to my on-camera career, I also run a production team, and offer media and strategy consulting for several top startups.

Born in Beijing, I moved to East Lansing, MI when I was 8 years old. My Mandarin Chinese? Pretty solid. But my Chinglish is even better. When I moved to the US, my first love was hip hop dancing, which I learned from MTV music videos (I know every move to “If”). Then I became intrigued with the dating culture when I moved to NYC and witnessed the start of online dating. And finally after moving back to Beijing and being exposed to top secret tech prototypes, I developed my passion for technology. After residing in SF for 5 years, I feel very fortunate to be able to foster all three of my passions in an industry that has allowed me to be me! I spend most of my time now in LA where I can be around other creatives and entertainment professionals.

Like a good Asian kid, I hold a double major in Business and Sociology from UC-Berkeley. But like a rebellious Asian kid, I quit my promising consulting and advertising career to pursue the entertainment industry during my quarterlife crisis. I haven’t looked back since and my parents haven’t disowned me yet. Double win.

I am the momager to a rescue dog influencer named Mojo. He’s pretty level-headed. Especially for LA standards.

Dating Sociologist

Following a chance encounter while living in NYC, I became someone’s “dating coach.” Within a year, I found myself starting my own coaching business called Singlefied, which I grew internationally. And eventually…I grew out of it. However, my love for love never faded. How do people meet in the modern world? Is monogamy dead? Why do Americans date several people at once and why do other cultures find this unfathomable? In 2015, I moved to SF and witnessed the most unusual dating scene ever. Hyper-blended gender roles. Microdosing to “feel” something. Dates that became funding pitches. And the ostracization of heteronormative behavior. I needed to capture the stories, and that’s when my friend Julie Krafchick and I started the Dateable Podcast, currently in its 16th season with features in the NY Times, CNN, and NBC News.

THE DATEABLE PODCAST

With the advent of technology, the promise of connectedness and accessibility also makes us feel lonelier than ever. My friend Julie and I created this podcast to show that we’re not alone in the dating conundrums that we go through. On each Dateable episode, we feature a real story from a real person of how they’re making dating work (or not). Some stories are juicy, some are insightful, and some will have you screaming, "I had the same thing happen to me!" More importantly, we give takeaways to apply to our own lives, all while laughing along the way. The Dateable Podcast was named one of the top dating podcasts by the NY Times, Huffington Post and BET, and has been featured in Thought Catalog, Bustle, Brit+Co, AskMen, SF Chronicle, and more.

Some of my favorite episodes:

The Decision to Have Kids (or Not) w/ Kate Kennedy

What it Means to be a Man (redefining gender expectations with Mark Greene from The Good Men Project)

How You’re Wired for Relationships w/ Dr. Avigail Lev (take the relationship schemas quiz if you haven’t yet!)

DATING SOCIOLOGIST IN THE PRESS

Calling anyone a Dating Expert seems amusing to me because it implies that you are really good at dating. The fact is, we’re all trying to figure it out, even the “experts.” That’s why I would consider myself a Dating Sociologist who has a love for sharing her findings! Since I collected all these learnings and experiences from the clients I had as a dating coach, I found it helpful to put it out there for those going through similar situations. I’ve made appearances on CNN, KQED, The May Lee Show, and Amazon Live and have filmed dozens of pilots about modern dating. Dating, on the surface, may seem to be all about the other people you meet, but at its core, dating is about your relationship with yourself.

What would your ex say about you?

Check out Yue and Julie’s new limited series podcast with iHeart Media called Exit Interview! On each episode, we interview a dater and their exes about what went wrong and where they can do better.

Cult Dance Fitness

When my grandmother took me to her senior disco dance classes in Beijing, I was hooked. Since then, I’ve danced in numerous commercials, performances, films and magazines. I guess you could say I found my groove. In my early 20’s, I discovered my passion for fitness. As someone who thought working out meant being on the elliptical, the world of fitness opened my eyes to a whole new lifestyle. I’ve even appeared in fitness videos for Self Magazine, Leslie Sansone, and Radius Fitness. As a result? The combination of dance and fitness has shown to be the best workout for the mind, body and soul. Cult Dance Fitness is the product of years of being a student and a teacher. Through upbeat music, fun choreography, and a proven fitness format, each class guarantees to leave you with a swexy smile. Perfect for all levels.

music videos

Do you know how I learned my dance moves? Through music videos! Janet Jackson, C+C Music Factory, and Usher taught me everything I know. Now I enjoy creating music videos for others, including my annual girls trip music videos with my college friends.

Tech Maven

I’ve always loved gadgets and being an early adopter of new tech (bragging rights among friends!). So, it was a dream to have worked on the inaugural season of The Gadget Show: China that filmed throughout China. After the series ended, the original UK Gadget Show invited me to join their presenter team. As the roaming reporter, I traveled the world looking for…well…gadgets, but also inventors and thought leaders to delight our tellies. Upon moving to San Francisco, the epicenter of tech, I’ve been profiling tech leaders and some of the world’s biggest tech conferences for TECHTHELEAD. Tech it out below!

I also have a list of vetted and tested gadgets that are tried and true!

The Gadget Show Highlight Reel

THE GADGET SHOW UK

In existence since 2004, The Gadget Show is one of the longest running TV shows in the UK. A new episode every week on Channel 5, the series is also syndicated throughout Europe and Australia. My first appearance on The Gadget Show was testing out progressive fitness tech in Seoul with the lovely and dashing Ortis Deley. Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to travel the globe with the GS crew, often finding myself in “someone pinch me” scenarios such as being on a hoverboard put together by velcro and duct tape (spoiler alert: it caught on fire) and being one fo the first to try VR before it became uncool.

The Gadget Show China Highlight Reel

THE GADGET SHOW CHINA

As the Chinese adaption of the Gadget Show, this TV episodic on Shenzhen Satellite allowed me to try out some out-of-this-world-not-safe-for-consumer prototypes, test my endurance during a 14-day trek in the grueling conditions of Lop Nur, and exercise my Mandarin language skills. My parents were very proud.

Lights. Camera. Magic.

When I was a toddler, my parents said I would stand so close to the TV I’d basically be in it. They weren’t wrong. Over a decade later, I’ve navigated through almost every crevice of the entertainment industry. My passion for creating content is both on-screen and off-screen.

Princess Cruises Commercial

on-camera

I started my entertainment career in NYC as an on-air host. I had no experience, no connections, but I had a vision. While working at Rapp Collins as a Strategic Planner, I convinced my co-workers to help me make a demo reel that I sent out to as many agents as possible. Lucky for me, Abrams saw something in my lo-def homemade video. But the rest wasn’t some glamorous ride through the magic of television. The entertainment industry taught me so much about perseverance, tenacity, courage, and humility. My journey hasn’t been about luck, but I’ve been extremely fortunate to be given the opportunities to thrive. Some of the highlights of my career have been:

Sample Marketing Videos

behind-the-camera

While working in front of the camera, I was intrigued by all the intricacies of what was happening behind the camera. Can you imagine a 2 day shoot, 100-person crew just to film a 60 second commercial? Can you believe so-and-so did not get cast because of a weak handshake? And do you know sometimes it takes 50 takes just to get one good sound bite? Since moving to SF, I’ve tackled the production journey for various Silicon Valley companies. We’ve created marketing content for the likes of Future League, Civic, People.ai, KPIT, Plickers, Superbloom, and OnCue.

In 2018, our team tackled the biggest challenge yet: Cash Show Trivia, a daily live-streaming trivia game show. I became the show’s Executive Producer. In less than 6 months, we were live in 5 countries (US, UK, Germany, France, Japan, and Australia), with at least 2 shows a day in each geo. We helped build studios in the US, Germany, Japan and Australia and while those studios were in progress, we were live-streaming to these countries from our SF studio. Starting from 2am all the way to 9pm, we would have various teams tornado in and out of the studio speaking different languages. In less than 6 months, Cash Show became the 2nd biggest trivia app in the US and the 1st in Europe. The team is still catching up on their beauty sleep.
